sodium fluoride or sodium monofluorosulphate?

Discussion in 'Dental Archive' started by Nicolas J. Fleet, Oct 5, 2003.

  1. I notice that toothpaste either contains sodium fluoride or sodium
monofluorosuphate. What is the difference between the two of them?
It seems that the former is used in less concentration than the
    latter.

Probably "sodium monofluoro_phosphate_" (abbreviated as SMFP or MFP). It
has a lower amount of fluoride per molecule as compared to sodium
fluoride. Thus, one needs more of it to get a certain concentration of
"fluoride" in a product. It doesn´t split off all of its fluoride,
    though, except after long storage.

BTW: "fluorosulphate" does also exist, but is not -as far as I know-
used in toothpaste. It was developed by the same guy who invented sodium
    monofluorophosphate
    (see http://pmeiers.bei.t-online.de/p-mfp.htm)

IT is related to the type of abrasive added to the toothpaste. You used to
find this difference between the "gel" toothpastes (they use silica for
abrasive) and the "paste" toothpastes (they use diatomaceous earth--sea
shells ground very fine--as the abrasive).
