Does anyone have any experience with the PerioProtect system of periodontal
disease control. Or even know what it is

You may wish to read my book, "Insider's guide to gum disease,
orthodontics and dentistry. What is not taught in Dental School." It
looks at the epidemiology of gum disease, and causes, and treatments."

Anyone spending money on gum treatment should read this book.

I began the perio protect system and bought 1 tray. However, after
talking to a dentist friend of mine, and reviewing the whole protocol
the provider was putting me through, I became suspicious. They make
you sign a bunch of forms which state that you realize that the
provider is not a qualified periodontist, others which makes you swear
you are going to use their brand of toothpaste. It seemed more and
more like a perio protect cult. The dentist had a pronounced tendency
to avoid procedures covered by my insurance. All the employees in the
office swear up and down that they are using the trays as well. There
was a reluctance to be upfront about the real cost of the whole
treatment (a life time of buying medication from a single mail-order
source). When I pointed out that all procedures which are not
directly covered by my insurance plan were subject to a %25 percent
discount they brought down the price per tray from $500 to $375 per
tray, and then anounced a%25 increase in prices during my next visit.
I looked for clinical trials on line. All I have been able to find is
a massive online marketing campaign where a search only reveals the
raves of subscribing providers or links to the company's website.
They only site that it has been FDA approve, big whoop, that means
nothing except the treatment wont kill you. I decided to pull out and
not throw good money after bad. I rather face surgery than be ripped
off and still face surgery afterwards. Maybe its effective, but all I
have found is online hype and a slick dentist trying to maximize his
"revenue stream" (a term used on the perio-protect's website on the
system's benefits to providers.) If it is effective, I will wait
until it is clinically proven and covered (at least in part) by
insurance. I am amazed that their are no independent reviews of the
claims available by a reputable dental association or institute.
Everything I have read have been obvious press releases.

Its sad to say but your dentist is not always looking out for your
best interest.

Can you address the PerioProtect system of treatment? That was the
question.

I have been using the system for about three weeks now and I must say that
my teeth both look and feel better. However, you are correct that there is
scant information out there. The Dentist that put me on the system has been
my dentist for over 15 years and I can't classify him as the type that is
just trying to increase his revenue stream although I am aware that there
are many out there that are. My understanding of the treatment is that you
use a Hydrogen Peroxide gel and Antibiotic in the trays for about 6 weeks
and then you just use the Peroxide Gel twice a day after that. The price of
the gel is about 18.00 for a tube that lasts 4-6 weeks. It seems that there
is no real information either positive or negative out there so it's hard to
make a judgment. I will let you know what happen in 4 weeks or so after my
next appointment.

Thank you very much for your considerate input

Please let me know how it progresses. I would like to believe that it
works, and there are many positive testimonials, but I like to have
something backed up by independent clinical trials. I have yet to
fill the antibiotic prescription, and changed dentist over the
ordeal. (He was a dentist I had just begun with, so I really didn't
trust him) If you show progress, please let me know. I've got one
set of trays, so I would give it a chance if I had some kind of
independent verification. You can use my email address
.

Thank You

Try asking for studies done by an independent source (not affiliated with
the company, and not selling the product). It should be a double blind
study with at least 200 patients. If they don't have the study,,,,,,,,,
well,,,,,, um,,,,,

Perioprotect System use Vibramycin syrup and peroxyl gel into the
trays. Time is dependent on the case, (ie. 2x/day for 15 min, 4x/day
15-20 min). It is a simple yet effective treatment for early to mild
periodontal cases. I have seen patients with 4-5 mm pockets become
3mm or less. However I'm not sure S/RP alone can not achieve the same
result.

For patients with 5mm+ pockets. Periolase (LANAP) is what I'll
recommend. I have seen 9mm+ pockets become 3mm or less within one
year. I know S/RP with perioProtect alone will not achieve this
result.
