My 14 year old was on a vacation trip to Italy and developed tooth
pain. She had some kind of emergency treatment from an Italian
dentist. It involved packing a cavity with some kind of medication
and got her through the week okay.
Back in Germany we took her to a dentist for followup. He said once
the decay reaches the nerve there is no option but a root canal, and
he did one on the spot. I have been amazed at how deft German
dentists are at root canals, they never refer to a specialist like I'm
used to in the US. Nor do they do a course of antibiotics first.
They must do a large number.
I'm satisfied the care was reasonable, I just wonder if we are close
to having some other kind of treatment option. I hate to put a child
through that unnecessarily, and now from what I read I have to expect
the expense of a crown at some point.
