My daughter got her braces off yesterday. They look the same as they
did $4000 ago (2 1/2 years). Lets see if I can describe the problem. I
would have hoped that after all this her top teeth would line up with
the bottoms (when closed) and it appears that she still has an
overbite? ie her top teeth overlap the bottoms. Guess I got ripped
off? Any comments welcome.

Show us before and after models of her teeth and we will comment.

What did you say to the orthodontist in this regard, and what was his
reply?

It is normal to have a discussion with patient and parent about the
goals of treatment. Is it possible you have discussed what the desired
outcome was, and you don't remember?
FWIW, front teeth edge-to-edge is not usually the desired endpoint of
orthodontic treatment, and a certain amount of overbite/overjet is
considered normal.
For instance, this young lady has a significant overjet that works
quite nicely for her:

Post some pictures.

My computer monitor cannot display the teeth without them.

uppers overlap the lowers in the normal dentition.
It is the amount of overbite, and overjet that is important.

I would suggest that if you have questions regarding the treatment result go
with her to the next visit. Call ahead and indicate that you would like to
have a post treatment consultation with the orthodontist to review
pretreatment problems, treatment objectives, and treatment results.

IMO most fathers don't accompany the patient to very many visits and after 2
1/2 years frequently forget what the appearance of the child's pre-treatment
occlusion was. And as others have indicated ideally there should be some
overlap in both and up and down direction, and also in an up and down
direction.

sometimes I get this comment, and I have to remind the patient's that
some times the teeth are ideal in the front and their bite is off in
the back. However this usually a rare case. Would love to see photos,
etc.

As a practicing orthodontist, my first thought would be did you daugher
do the things she was supposed to do: headgear, elastics, brekage,
missed appointments. If she did her part, then as suggested, have a
consultation and find out what went wrong.
